Chicago's lactation consultant groups, breastfeeding task forces, and La Leche League of Illinois have joined together to form the Chicago Area Breastfeeding Coalition (CABC). At this conference, find out what the CABC is doing and how you can get involved as we join together as one breastfeeding community.

Who Should Attend?

Those in the Chicago area who work with breastfeeding families: nurses, lactation consultants, physicians, dietitians, doulas, midwives, peer counselors, La Leche League Leaders, and public health staff.

Conference Objectives

After the conference, participants should be able to:

  • List the factors that determine a newborn’s biologically appropriate feeding pattern.
  • Identify the effects of breast storage capacity and degree of breast fullness on breastfeeding patterns and milk production.
  • List three changes in tongue function attributable to ankyloglossia.
  • Identify appropriate referrals for anatomically based sucking difficulties.
  • Describe management strategies to optimize breastfeeding in infants with anatomically based sucking difficulties.
  • Understand how primitive neonatal reflexes, gravity, infant state, and neonatal lie can be used to solve latching problems.
  • List six infant stress cues.
  • Identify four conditions that can negatively impact an infant’s ability to breastfeed.
  • Describe how infants cycle through states of organization.
  • List two opportunities to model developmentally supportive, responsive parenting techniques to clients.

Location

Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, 1775 West Dempster, Park Ridge, IL is located northwest of Chicago, 1/2 mile east of I-294. From the South, take the Dempster East exit from I-294 to the hospital. From the North, take the Golf Road exit from I-294, turn left at Golf, right at Potter, and left at Dempster about 1/2 mile to the hospital.

Parking

All-day parking is $5 in the West garage (across Luther Lane from the hospital next to the Cancer Care Center). There is free parking in the surface lot north of Dempster at Luther Lane. No shuttles on Saturday. Handicapped spots in front of the main hospital require a placard or sticker.

Cost

The conference fee of is $55* online using paypal. (or you can print out the attached pdf for and mail in your check for $50 and avoid a $5 paypal online fee). The conference fee includes continental breakfast, lunch, refreshments breaks, conference syllabus and CERPs and nurses' contact hours. A late fee of $20 will be charged for registrations online or postmarked after September 15, 2010. Kathy Baker Memorial Scholarships are available. To receive a scholarship application, please print the attached pdf form and check the appropriate box on the registration form before mailing it. *$40 (or you can print out the attached pdf and mail in your check for $35 and avoid a $5 paypal online fee) for Peer Counselors, LLL Leaders and Doulas.

Learning Environment

The conference auditorium is not an ideal environment for toddlers, but there will be a separate room with conference audio and video feeds where mothers or caregivers can entertain toddlers. Quiet infants are welcome in the auditorium. If your baby or toddler becomes vocal, please care for him/her outside the auditorium. If you need an electric pump and/or a room for pumping, please contact us before the conference to make arrangements. Please bring a sweater or jacket as the room may become cool.

Contact Hours/CERPs

CERPs (6.0 L CERPs) have been applied for from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE).
Advocate Health Care is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Illinois Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. 6.0 contact hours will be awarded upon successful completion of this program.
This year, for the first time, partial CERPs and CEs will be available.

Refunds

Your fees, minus a $20 cancellation fee, will be refunded only if a written request is received by 09/15/10.
